Using Essential Oils for Self-Care

June 6, 2019

In this age and time where, one way or the other, stress- whether it's physical or emotional- is part of our daily life many of us have made it a priority to find ways to manage and cope with this difficulties.

Every person has a different way of managing stress. In some cases of extreme symptoms, people sometimes need medication and therapy to help them cope. In other cases, making changes in your life routine and your mindset can be very beneficial to relieve some of this pressure.

I particularly love using holistic and natural techniques and remedies to treat my symptoms. I'm a huge believer in alternative medicine and try to face the root cause of my ailments instead of just masking the symptoms.

I think that one of the biggest things we can do for ourselves to avoid being burnout by our day to day tasks is to set some time aside to check in with our self and balance our energy by using special self-care rituals. I wrote a post sharing some easy ways anyone can practice self-care. It doesn't have to be an expensive or complicated routine. Sometimes all you need is a couple of minutes to unwind and relax.

So today, I wanted to share how I've been using essential oils in my self-care routine and my everyday life. I wanted to give you some ideas on little things you can do to incorporate them into your own wellness and self-care practices.

Where I Purchased my Essential Oils

If you've never used essential oils before, some the information available can feel a bit overwhelming. You might even be confused as to where to purchase essential oils. You need to be aware of the quality and pureness of the oils.

That was something I was worried before I ever purchased any essential oils. When I browsed through Amazon there were hundreds of brands available but I wasn't sure if the quality was great. Other sites have brands that are so over-hyped because they are a marketing scheme, that I was very skeptical of buying from them, especially considering that this brands are really expensive.

And the amount of oils available makes it even more confusing as to which ones to buy for starters. So, I was really happy with purchasing my first essential oils from Vasseur Essentials: a new company created by Brittany Vasseur.

What I loved the most about this brand is that they sell the oils in kits. Each kit comes with 4 essential oils, 1 bottle of carrier oil, 1 roller bottle, 1 dropper bottle and a funnel. They also come with recipe cards, dilution guidelines and detailed information on each essential oil.

I think this is the perfect way to get started using essential oils. These kits make it so easy to use and get educated on the benefits and uses. And the quality is amazing. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing they smell. The price for each kit is $45 but you can buy the two kits as a bundle for $80. There's a bundle for $120 that includes the two kits and a diffuser (which is the one I bought). You won't get this price on other websites or other brands, especially with the high quality of Vasseur Essentials.

I can honestly say I feel confident and safe using my Vasseur Essentials kits and diffuser and that these are indeed pure essential oils of great quality. They won't cause any harm to your health and are made of the best ingredients.

*A little disclaimer: this post is NOT SPONSORED by Vasseur Essentials or anyone for that matter. Two Ways to Use Essential Oils for Self-Care

Now that we've covered some basics , I wanted to share two ways I've been using essential oils as part of my self-care routine. These are some of the easiest things you can do but that will make a big difference when it comes to helping you manage stress or other feelings of unease.

1. Diffusing Essential Oils

First, is using an essential oil diffuser. You add a few drops of essential oils to your diffuser and let it work its magic. What a diffuser does is break down water and essential oils in tiny particles and disperse these through the air in the form of a mist. This air is purified and humidified with the added benefit of the aromatic and therapeutic properties of whatever essential oil you added to the water.

You can read this article with guidelines and information about diffusing essential oils.

My personal favourite blends to use when diffusing my essential oils are:

Blend #1

2 drops lavender

2 drops ylang ylang

1 drop frankincense

This blend helps to unwind and relax. I use it at night when I want to calm myself, especially after a rough day. I feel more grounded and balanced and my mind quiets down. Perfect for those nights you want peace of mind.

Blend #2

2 drops mandarin

2 drops grapefruit

1 drop lemon

1 drop ylang ylang

This blend is great for uplifting your mood. When I feel sad, tired and unmotivated, I put on my diffuser and let these wonderful smell fill my office or room. I feel so happy and cheerful with this blend.

2. Roller Bottle Blends

This is my favourite way to incorporate essential oils into my everyday life. To create a roller bottle blend you are going to need to dilute your essential oils. For that you need to use a carrier oil. The essential oil on its own is very potent so you only need a tiny amount if you're planning on applying it to your skin. The carrier oil helps dilute it to a point where it won't cause any irritation to the skin while your body absorbs and receives all the health benefits.

You can read this article from Dr. Josh Axe, which has a comprehensive guide on all you need to know about essential oil safety.

I created two roller blends recipes that have tremendously helped me in managing my anxiety and low energy.

First is what I called Refresh. This blend helps me deal with low energy, groggy mood and headaches.

You'll need:

1 Roller Bottle (10 ml)

2 drops peppermint

2 drops grapefruit

1 drop lavender

1 drop frankincense

Carrier Oil

Procedure:

1. Add the suggested amount of essential oil drops to your roller bottle.

2. Then fill up the rest with your carrier oil. (I used 100% Pure Fractionated Coconut Oil) but feel free to use one that suits your needs. Here's an article with more information about carrier oils.

3. Put on the roller cap and you're done.

4. Additional: print out a label that includes the blend recipe or name so you know what the bottle contains.

The second blend is called Serene. This one works particularly well for those times when I feel anxious, nervous and a bit jumpy.

You'll need:

1 Roller Bottle (10 ml)

2 drops lavender

2 drops bergamot

1 drop frankincense

1 drop ylang ylang

Carrier Oil

Procedure:
