Review: Best Albums Released in Spring-Summer 2018

September 20, 2018

I can already feel the crispy air and the pumpkin spice fragrance around me. I'm a huge lover of the Autumn Season. So in honour of these last days of sunshine and warm air, I wanted to share with you what I think were the best albums released in Spring-Summer 2018. I'm not a music connoisseur or a professional critic, so this review is based on my personal taste in music and the work from some of my favourite artists at the moment.  So if you're a music lover or are looking for some new music to add to your playlist then keep on reading to see which albums made the list.

1. Sweetener

by Ariana Grande

Ariana released her fourth studio album on August 17th. I felt that in this record she reinvented herself. Most of the songs are very romantic and sentimental. After all she's been through in the past year, you can tell from the songs, that she was longing for a new beginning and learning how to make the most of life by truly enjoying the present. The album has a complete different sound from her previous work and each song offers a complete different vibe. It's a more mature record lyrically speaking, with simple tune arrangements that make this one of the best new mixes of pop, trap and R&B.

My favourite songs are: God is a woman, everytime, breathin, sweetener, better off, and get well soon

2. Shawn Mendes

by Shawn Mendes

Can I jut say how much I love Shawn Mendes!? He is the most gorgeous man and has the most amazing, romantic, dreamy voice. Okay, now back to talking about music. Shawn Mendes released his third studio album on May 25th and in my opinion is the best record he's put out. He has a more mature sound, and the songwriting has evolved as well. Not everything about him is love and romance. so I was really impressed by his more personal songs where he shares his struggles and hardships.

My favourite songs are: In My Blood, Lost in Japan, Perfectly Wrong, Nervous and Fallin' All in You,

3. Bloom

by Troye Sivan

Without a doubt this is, in my opinion, the best album released so far. Troye is constantly outdoing himself. Honestly, I've never heard a Troye Sivan song that I didn't like since his first EP came out. I don't even know what to say other than this album, released on August 31st, is a masterpiece and you definitely should listen to it, if you haven't. It encompasses such a myriad of emotions, with each song offering a different vibe. It makes you dance, it makes you cry, it makes you reflect, it makes you feel sexy and empowered.

My favourite songs are: Seventeen, Dance to This, What a Heavenly Way to Die, Lucky Strike, Plum, and My, My, My.

4. Golden Hour

by Kacey Musgraves

I know they might be some of you that don't particularly have a liking for Country Music, and that's fine. But let me tell you, you're really missing out because Kacey Musgraves is an incredibly talented artist and this album is one of the best Country records that I've ever listened to. It was released on March 30th, featuring Kacey as a co-writer in all 13 tracks. Something about this record gives me comfort and I feel like I'm home. I know it sounds weird but when you listen to it, you'll know what I mean. The songwriting in this album is phenomenal. It's simple yet provoking, it's relatable but feels fresh...like it's the first time you hear this story.

My favourite songs are: High Horse, Butterflies, Slow Burn, Happy & Sad, Oh What a World and Golden Hour.

5. Scorpion

by Drake

With a viral dance challenge for his song In My Feelings, Drake's double sided album, released June 29th, really blew the entire world away. Honestly, I wasn't too excited about Drake putting out new music since he released Nothing Was the Same. I felt a little disappointed with some records until the release of Scorpion. But I completely changed my disbelief when I gave it a shot.  For me, the biggest surprise and what I like the most was the R&B side of this record. Drake actually has a very sexy-romantic voice and he blessed us by giving the world 13 tracks of exactly that. Overall, the songwriting is genius, the beats and arrangements are incredible and the music videos he has put out are good enough to be a trending topic all over the internet.

My favourite songs are: Jaded, Emotionless, Nice for What, That's How You Feel, and March 14.

6. 8 Letters

by Why Don’t We

I just recently heard about Why Don't We so I'm a new fan. I love a good boy band and since there's no indication as to whether One Direction will come back from its hiatus, I decided to give this new boy band a shot. And I wasn't disappointed. These guys have amazing voices, they are super cute and the lyrics and songs are actually good. This guys are just starting out, so I'm hoping their music will mature as time goes by. But for now, I say they have a good album, that is easy to listen and chill out to.

My favourite songs are: 8 Letters, In Too Deep, Talk, Hooked, and Falling.
